Gutter Guards in St. Petersburg
Oak leaves, pine needles and palm debris are what clog gutters here. Guards run $6–$10 per linear foot installed, and we will tell you if your roof does not need them.
Do you actually need them?
This is the one gutter product that gets oversold, so here is the honest version.
Guards are usually worth it if you have live oaks, slash pines or cabbage palms over the roof. Oak catkins in spring and pine needles year-round are the two worst things for a St. Pete gutter, and needles in particular will pack an unguarded gutter solid in a season.
Guards are usually not worth it if your roof is clear of overhanging trees. A clear roof sheds a bit of grit and not much else, and a clean every couple of years costs far less than guarding the whole house.
We will walk the property and tell you which you are. If the answer is “you do not need these”, that is what you will hear.
The types, and what they actually do
| Type | Installed | Honest assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Foam inserts | $3–$5 / ft | Cheap. Degrades in our UV and holds seed in the foam. We do not recommend them. |
| Plastic screen, clip-in | $4–$7 / ft | Keeps leaves out, lets needles through, becomes brittle in sun. Budget option. |
| Aluminum screen | $6–$9 / ft | Solid middle ground. Handles leaves well, fine mesh versions handle needles. |
| Micro-mesh, stainless | $8–$10 / ft | The one that genuinely stops pine needles and shingle grit. What we fit most. |
| Reverse-curve / surface tension | $9–$14 / ft | Works, but in heavy Florida rain it can shed water straight over the front. |
What guards do not do
No guard makes a gutter maintenance-free, whatever the advert says. Fine grit still gets through micro-mesh, and debris still sits on top of any guard and needs blowing off, particularly after a storm. What a good guard does is turn a twice-a-year ladder job into an occasional one, and stop the clog that causes an overflow during the worst rain of the year.
Anyone promising you will never clean a gutter again is selling, not advising.
Per-foot rates multiplied by your gutter run gives a fair estimate. The exact figure comes from measuring on site, free.
Common questions
Will guards stop pine needles?
Micro-mesh will. Standard screen will not; needles stand on end and work through the holes. If you have slash pines over the roof, micro-mesh is the only type worth fitting.
Can guards be fitted to my existing gutter?
Usually yes, provided the gutter is sound and hung properly. If it sags or leaks, fix that first, otherwise you are putting a lid on a broken system.
Do guards void my roof warranty?
Some guard types fasten under the shingle, which certain manufacturers object to. We fit types that attach to the gutter itself where that is a concern. Ask and we will confirm for your roof.
How much do they cost for a whole house?
Most St. Pete homes come to $900 to $2,400 depending on total run and type. The per-foot rates above multiplied by your gutter run is the honest way to estimate it.
Will I still need gutter cleaning?
Less often, and that is the point. Expect to have debris blown off the top of the guards after storm season rather than scooping the inside out twice a year.
